Lady Senators building toward future
Norris Middle School girls basketball Coach Derek Wallace knew he was taking over a young team when he accepted the job in the offseason.
“We’re a very young team, and we’re building for the future,” Wallace said.
“Our district is tough, and I’m not discouraged.”
The Lady Senators, navigating a season of growing pains, are off to a 2-5 start, but recently picked up a district win over Jefferson.
Like Norris, the Lady Eagles are also rebuilding with a roster of young players.
In the victory over Jefferson, Norris had two players score in double figures.
Addie Blevins led the way with 13 points, while Addison Willoughby added 10. Avery Goehring chipped in four, and Kimbree Rains, Leah Nichols, Jayden Mooney, and Kaylee Matchette each scored two.
As Wallace looks to the future of his program, the Norris junior varsity team gave him reason for optimism in its 18-10 win over Jefferson.
Emma Willoughby paced the Lady Senators’ balanced scoring attack with five points, while Emerson Irwin added three.
Lauren Niddifer, Rains (who also appeared in the varsity game), Evie Chambers, Leah Nichols, and Evelyn Unthank each scored two points.
