Dragons flex in pre-Christmas schedule wrap-up

The Clinton High School boys basketball team continued its extended road trip last week, playing three games away from the Don W. Lockard Gymnasium.

The Dragons (9-6 overall, 2-0 District 4-AAA) won two of those three contests, starting with a district victory over Gibbs in Corryton on Saturday, Dec. 14.

Clinton closed out the pre-Christmas portion of its schedule with a 49-37 win over Gordonsville in the Gordonsville Christmas Tournament on Saturday.

Clinton entered the holiday break having won four of its last five.

The Dragons opened tournament play on Friday with a 53-52 loss to Warren County.

Despite leading 27-20 at halftime and 40-35 heading into the final frame, Clinton was outscored 18-12 in the fourth quarter as Warren County completed a comeback victory.

In their final game before Christmas, the Dragons had three players score in double figures.

Bryson Maddox led with 15 points, followed by Jaxson Alcorn with 12, and Kaden Ison, who tallied 10 points, four rebounds, and four assists.

Clinton picked up its second district win of the season earlier in the week, defeating Union County 50-38 in Maynardville on Tuesday, Dec. 17.

Ison posted a double-double, leading the Dragons with 24 points and 10 rebounds.

Clinton trailed 26-25 at halftime, but clamped down defensively in the second half, holding the Patriots to just 12 points over the final 16 minutes.

Union County managed only six points in each of the third and fourth quarters.

The Dragons will return to action after the holiday break, looking to build on their recent momentum.
