Dragons edge Union at district duals

Clinton High School’s wrestling team earned a hard-fought victory at the District 3-A dual championships Thursday at Anderson County.

The Dragons advanced past Union County in the first round, claiming a 37-36 win on a tie-breaker.

Both teams scored 36 points, but Clinton was awarded the match for having more near-falls.

In the 144-pound division, Bryson Bunch won by fall.

Adam Gonzales pinned his opponent in the 157-pound weight class, while Dalton Kendall recorded a pin in the 215-pound division.

Jake Brown (165), Jordan Smith (175) and Bryson Breeden (190) added points with wins by forfeit.

Clinton faced Gibbs in the second round and lost 54-18 to the eventual district runner-up.

The Dragons’ points came from pins by Gonzales, Smith and Kendall.

On Saturday, Clinton competed at the Dan Dugger Duals at Karns High School.

The Dragons defeated Grace Christian Academy 36-30, winning three matches by forfeit and recording three pins.

Bunch, Brown, and Smith each earned wins by forfeit, while Kendall, Brown, and Smith secured victories by fall.

Clinton later fell to Morristown West, 42-30.

Bunch, Brown, Breeden and Keenan Hoskins (126) won by forfeit, with Kendall adding a win by fall.
