Mavericks stays unbeaten in District 4-AAA
A pair of victories last week helped the Anderson County High School boys basketball team keep its perfect District 4-AAA record intact.
The Mavericks (14-8, 8-0 district) won their seventh consecutive game Friday night, routing Union County 87-58 in Maynardville.
This one was over early, as Anderson County raced to a 52-22 halftime lead after torching the Patriots’ defense for 32 first-quarter points.
Brandon Dake led all scorers with 36 points, knocking down eight 3-pointers. He poured in 27 of his points in the first half.
Dake was one of three Mavericks to score in double figures. Sophomore Cam Lawson added 18 points, while Hayden Craig finished with 10, who converted 10 long-range jumpers at Union County.
The dominant performance against Union County came after the Mavericks opened the week at home with a hard-fought win over Scott on Tuesday, Jan. 28.
The victory against the Highlanders didn’t come as easily. Scott led 13-10 after the first quarter and held a 21-18 advantage at halftime in a defensive battle. The Mavericks, who had routed the Highlanders by 36 points in their first meeting in Huntsville, led after three quarters but had to withstand a late rally.
Scott trimmed Anderson County’s lead to 50-47 in the closing moments, but the Mavericks secured the win at the free-throw line. Lawson hit 3-of-4 foul shots in the final stretch, while Trent Strickland’s free throw with nine seconds left provided the final margin.
Despite their offensive struggles, four Mavericks reached double figures against Scott. Lawson led with 16 points, followed by Dake (12), Craig (11), and Ethan Nelson (10).
The Mavericks return to district play Friday when they host crosstown rival Clinton. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
