On Saturday, however, the Mavericks had a record-setting day on the mats at the Region 2-A championships.
Anderson County advanced 11 wrestlers to the state sectionals from the regional tournament, held at the Don W. Lockard Gymnasium at Clinton High School.
This week, the Mavericks, who recently competed in the Class A state duals for the second- consecutive year, face a long road trip to sectionals, set for Saturday at Chuckey-Doak High School.
At regionals, five Anderson County wrestlers claimed individual titles. Three others reached the finals, two finished third, and another took fourth in his weight class.
Christopher Baldwin (106 pounds), Aiden Reed (113), Max Wolfley (138), Eli Bratton (190) and Josh Bingham (215) all won regional championships.
“It was definitely a record for us,” Anderson County Coach Matt Slone said. “I think the most we’ve had before is three region champions, and the most people we’ve had in the finals is five.
“We wrestled really, really well,” he said. “We had 11 guys advance and eight in the finals.”
Zed Houlet (120 pounds), Evan Prewitt (157), and Isaiah Tuckey (175) each finished as runners-up in their respective weight classes.
Tripp Haire (126) and Hayden Harrell (144) placed third, while Edmund Presson (134) finished fourth as the competition shifted to the individual portion of the postseason.
“Now we’re in the part of the season where it depends on how hard you want to work for yourself,” Slone said.
“And all these guys have put in the work it takes to get there.”
