Despite the skid, the Lady Mavericks put together one of their best performances in weeks, falling 60-49 to Northview Academy on Senior Night.
“Against Northview Academy, we played our best game in two weeks, maybe more,” ACHS Coach Mitch Cupples said. “We had a nine-point lead in the third quarter against a Top 10 team in the state.
“They’re 26-3 or something like that,” he said. “ Their only losses were to Cocke County twice and Bearden. It was Senior Night, so I think everybody was a little more inspired.”
Macy Basford led Anderson County with 20 points, while Bethany Lowe added 11. Emerie Bullock finished with seven.
The game marked the final regular-season home appearance for seniors Shelby Kelly and Kyrstan Campbell, both of whom have been key contributors to the program.
“These are two great young ladies,” Cupples said. “I couldn’t ask for better players, on the court, off the court, in the classroom, and in the community. They’re hard-working and have been very important to our program.”
The Lady Mavericks faced an elimination game Tuesday in the District 4-AAA yournament quarterfinals against Gibbs. Results were not available at press time, but a win would have set up a third matchup against No. 2 seed Clinton. The third-seeded Lady Mavs swept the regular-season series against the sixth-seeded Lady Eagles.
“It’s a very important game for us, that’s for sure,” Cupples said of the tournament opener at Union County High School in Maynardville. “If we win, we qualify for the region, and that guarantees us two more games.”
Anderson County began the week with a 35-29 district loss at Cumberland Gap. Basford led the team with 12 points, while Addison Grooms added eight.
On Thursday, South-Doyle handed ACHS another 35-29 defeat in Clinton. Lowe scored 13 points, Bullock had 11, and Basford finished with 10.
