UCOR donates $40,000 to Roane State Foundation
United Cleanup Oak Ridge has renewed its commitment to Roane State Community College students with a $40,000 donation to support the Environmental Health Technology and Chemical Engineering Technology programs.
Roane State Foundation will distribute the funds equally between the two programs, enhancing resources and providing support for students across
the college’s 10-county service area.
UCOR, an Amentum-led partnership with Honeywell, serves as the lead environmental contractor for the U.S. Department of Energy’s 32,000-acre Oak Ridge reservation.
The company’s 2,500 employees manage nuclear facilities and oversee the safe cleanup of former nuclear structures at the Y-12 National Security Complex and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, many dating to the Manhattan Project.
Since the inception
of Roane State’s CET program, UCOR has played a key role in its development, providing advisory support and financial contributions.
This collaboration earned statewide recognition in 2023 when the Tennessee Board of Regents awarded UCOR and Roane State its “Statewide Outstanding Achievement Recognition Partnership Award.”
Many Roane State students have completed apprenticeships with UCOR that led to full-time employment. The company also offers internships and career opportunities for program graduates.
“UCOR is proud of our continued partnership with Roane State, as we now have a local workforce pipeline offering rewarding career opportunities to support our cleanup mission,” said UCOR Administrative Services Director Charles Malarkey.
Previous donations have funded new equipment for the CET lab and software designed to provide hands-on learning experiences.
“These upgrades help us ensure our graduates are fully prepared for a career in chemical processing and operations,” said Laura Hofman, CET program director at Roane State.
Building on the success of its CET partnership, UCOR recently expanded its support
to include the EHT program.
“Thanks to this effort, EHT students have been able to train on UCOR equipment under the instruction of professionals,” said Roane State Foundation Executive Director Scott Niermann. “The funding also provides scholarships that ease financial strain and help our students be successful in the classroom.”
