Clinton bats sizzle in six-game stretch

“Our girls are swinging some big bats right now,” Lady Dragons Coach Leonard Sams said. “They’re really hitting the ball well.”
The Lady Dragons spent the weekend co-hosting a tournament with Anderson County.
The two crosstown rivals closed the weekend playing against each other, with the Lady Mavericks posting a 3-2 victory.
Although the Lady Dragons outhit ACHS 13-7, they committed six errors in the contest.
Pitcher Taylor Sherwood took the tough-luck loss in the circle as all three of the Lady Mavericks’ runs were unearned. She gave up seven hits and five walks, while striking out four.
Sherwood, who also bats leadoff, went 1-for-5 at the plate.
“Taylor was really fatigued in that game,” Sams said. “She gave up three unearned runs.”
Lynlee Adkins had three hits against the Lady Mavericks, while Elizabeth Graham and Mandy Chambers each contributed two.
Graham also doubled and scored in Clinton’s third game of the day.
Earlier Saturday, Clinton downed Coalfield 10-2.
Chambers homered and went 2-for-4.
Adkins doubled among her three hits and drove in three runs. Sherwood finished 2-for-3 and scored twice. Tegan Bunch singled and scored twice.
Graham had two hits, including a double. She scored a run and knocked in two.
The Lady Dragons opened Saturday’s action with an 11-5 comeback win over Hardin Valley Academy.
Clinton erased an early 4-0 deficit with six runs in the second inning and five more in the third.
Addison George had two hits, including a double, and drove in a run. Sherwood singled and scored twice. Bunch doubled, scored twice and drove in two. Adkins doubled, scored, and tallied three RBIs against the Lady Hawks.
Clinton started the tournament Friday with two dominant performances, routing Coalfield 19-0 and shutting out Eagleton 13-0.
Sherwood tossed a three-inning one-hit shutout against Coalfield and struck out five. She also hit two home runs, drove in six runs and scored three times. Norah Elliott homered and Adkins added a double.
Against Eagleton, Sherwood and George combined on another one-hit shutout. Sherwood also had three hits, including a double and a triple, drove in three runs and scored once. Graham had a hit and four RBIs, and scored twice.
Bunch collected two hits and scored twice. Elizabeth Maples doubled and drove in two runs, while Bryana Holt notched two hits, including a double, scored twice and added an RBI.
Clinton fell 14-13 to Oliver Springs on Thursday.
The Lady Dragons opened district play Tuesday at Anderson County. Results were unavailable at press time.
Clinton was to host Christian Academy of Knoxville at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday before traveling to Scott for a district doubleheader Thursday. The Lady Dragons will then compete in the Eastman Invitational over the weekend.
