Dragons top Cumberland Gap, Rockwood

After dropping its first two matches of the 2025 season, the Clinton High School boys soccer team has bounced back with consecutive victories.

The Dragons (2-2) notched a 4-2 win over Cumberland Gap on Friday night at Dragon Stadium, with four different players finding the back of the net.

Angel Venegas, Isaac Purcell, Andrew Vargas and Osmar Vasquez each scored for Clinton. Vasquez also contributed an assist in the victory.

Clinton also picked up a 2-0 shutout win over Rockwood on Tuesday, March 25, in its first match back from spring break.

Ben Tackett posted a clean sheet in his debut as goalkeeper. Vargas scored both goals, while Isaiah Williams notched an assist.

“We had to figure some things out,” Clinton Coach Filip Leander said. “We had to figure out who was a good practice player and who was a game player — who could step up when you have an opponent that’s coming at you 100 miles per hour.”

Williams and Camden Nelson have joined the soccer squad after successful basketball seasons.

“Camden is doing a great job, and Isaiah Williams is just so athletic — he played really well against Rockwood,” Leander said.

The Dragons return to action Thursday night, opening District 4-AAA play on the road against crosstown rival Anderson County. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m.
