New projects mark CCS school year’s end
As the school year wraps up, Clinton City Schools is moving ahead with new projects and end-of-year activities.
“Now that the TCAP is over, May is fast and furious,” said Director of Schools Kelly Johnson at the April 28 Clinton City Council meeting.
“Something exciting is happening in every single day in one of our schools,” she said.
Auditorium and Playground
At the meeting, the council approved $400,000 for a new playground and auditorium seating, both for Clinton Elementary School.
Scott Rhea, the district’s fiscal services director, told the City Council that the school system received $500,000 because the state designated it an “Outstanding School District.”
“This state grant will cover the playground and auditorium cost with some funds to spare,” he said.
Johnson explained that if a district has more than 50% of the schools with letter A grade, they are awarded a certain amount of money determined by the size of the district.
Clinton City Schools received the $500,000 because it had two letter As and one B. The state grades local schools based on “student achievement, student academic growth, and growth of the highest-need students.”
Johnson said Clinton Elementary School had already ordered equipment for the new playground. She said she hoped to have the playground ready for the students by August.
Rhea said he was putting it in the budget for this year just in case it could be finished before June 30.
New Parking Lot
Johnson said Clinton Elementary School had finished the striping on its new parking lot and the spaces in front of the central office.
