Renovations to bowling alley coming

City Council approves new budget, motel tax, zoning

The Clinton City Council unanimously approved a contract with Brunswick Bowling to renovate the Community Center’s bowling alley for $370,548.

The contract includes new ball returns, gutters, new gutter guards, new masking and a new back end as well as automated score keeping. City Manager Roger Houk said while the city regularly sands the lanes every four or five years, the rest hasn’t had major renovations since 1978 and the city has had trouble finding replacement parts.

“My biggest surprise with this is that this is the first thing that we’ve bid in the last year that came under budget,” he said.

Clinton City Council members Wendy Maness and Matt Foster were not at the meeting and absent for this and all other votes.

Budget

The Council also approved a draft budget on first of two readings. It will need to pass again to go into effect.

“It’s a balanced budget, revenues and expenditures,” Houck said.

However, due to property reappraisal not being final until July 1, the budget will not include a tax rate. The City Council will have to pass that after that time.

The proposed budget includes a 6% payroll raise.

Hotel/Motel Tax

On second reading, the City Council raised Clinton’s Hotel/motel tax, but due to the county rate lowering, the overall rate of tax on stays in Clinton won’t change. It will stay 8%.

The county lowered its rate from 5% to 4%. The city of Clinton in turn has now raised its rate from 3% to 4% Houck estimated this raised

hotel/motel tax will bring $90,000 in new revenue.

Zoning

The Council also unanimously approved a resolution allowing for residential development in interstate commercial districts.
