Sounds of summer take center stage in Norris

The second of now five planned performances in this summer’s Norris “Concerts on the Commons” series will be held this Friday evening (June 13) with a performance by AYCA, featuring rock, pop, dance, jazz and R&B music.

Despite the rain, there was a good turnout last Friday night as Liquid Velvet kicked off the series on the outdoor stage next to the Lions Club Pavilion downtown.

Another concert was added to the schedule last week, according to the Norris Recreation Commission’s Facebook page.

Retrospect, a local band featuring classic rock, folk, Americana, and singer-songwriter music, has agreed to perform on Friday, June 26, which initially was an open date.

The schedule includes a July 4 concert, which will close out this year’s Concerts on the Commons.

Here is the remaining schedule:

• June 13: AYCA, rock, pop, dance, jazz and R&B music.

• June 20: My New Favorites, a four-member acoustic group playing original songs, with honky-tonk and Appalachian roots.

• June 26: Retrospect, classic rock, folk, Americana and singer-songwriter music.

• July 4: 110 in the Shade, a six-member group performing funk, soul, Motown, and R&B numbers.

All of the concerts begin at 7 p.m., and are scheduled to end by 9 p.m.

The concerts are being hosted by the Norris Recreation Commission.

There is no admission charge, but attendees are requested to bring their own chairs or blankets to sit on in the grassy area in front of the stage, on the grounds of Norris Middle School.

The July 4 concert will be followed by a 20-minute fireworks display.

Jack Mitchell, who was a longtime Norris real-estate agent and publisher of the Norris Bulletin, created the concert series 16 years ago.

Powell Clinch Utility District has been the sponsor of the series since its inception, helping to pay the performers.
