Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
What do Sydney Sweeney and Commissioner Anthony Allen have in common?
Apparently quite a lot. For one thing both were recently subjected to ridiculous, irrational verbal attacks on social media and in the news.
Sweeney was attacked over an ad for denim blue jeans. In the ad she says that genes are responsible for certain traits like hair and eye color. As the camera closes in on her face and blue eyes she says, “My jeans are blue.” A printed message follows and fills the entire screen. It says, “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.” Some people said they were offended by the ad and attacked Sweeney. They accused her of racism and promoting white supremacy, Nazi propaganda, and eugenics.
Commissioner Allen was attacked over a post on Facebook. He posted a video of a young woman who has made it her mission to counter anti-masculinity propaganda. In this particular video, she claims that men do not need women.
Allen did not take a position on the woman’s dubious comments. He merely noted them and opened them up for discussion. According to a junior reporter for WBIR, some Anderson County commissioners claimed that Allen’s post was misogynistic and disgusting, and that he could be censured.
I do not know Sweeney, but I do know Commissioner Allen. He is not a misogynist. He is an independent thinker and highly conscientious, moral, wise, rational, and educated. He has degrees in electrical engineering and computer science. It appears that some commissioners do not appreciate his qualities and want to derail his re-election next year by fabricating gossip and getting a local news station to portray a petty, nonexistent story as if it were news – so pathetic.
By the way, Sydney Sweeney and Commissioner Allen have a couple other things in common that are worth mentioning: They are both bona fide members of the Republican Party, and they both have great genes.
