Mavs golf remains unbeaten; Lady Mavs edged by two strokes

In their only matches last week, the Anderson County High School golf teams had a bittersweet day on the course.

The bitter: The Lady Mavericks finished second in a four-way match at Deerfield Country Club in LaFollette, falling to Gibbs by two strokes in a nine-hole event.

The sweet: The Mavericks kept their perfect record intact, winning a five-way match with a team score of 162. They outdistanced Campbell County (171), Lee County, Virginia (172), Clinton (178) and Gibbs (181).

Gibbs carded an 86 to win the girls’ event, followed by Anderson County (88), Campbell County (105) and Clinton (108).

“That was a heartbreaker, losing to Gibbs by two strokes,” Anderson County first-year Coach Dallas Cole said. “But our girls are having a phenomenal season. That was our first loss, and the team we lost to isn’t in our district.”

Sydney May led the Lady Mavericks with a 41, while Molly Jackson rounded out the team scoring with a 47.

For the boys, Maddox Tackett fired a 38 to pace the Mavericks. Hoyt Chadwell shot a 40, Luke Baldwin had a 41 and Max Stanfill closed out the scoring with a 43.

“Our boys are undefeated right now and our girls have just the one loss, but I don’t think we’ve tapped our potential,” Cole said. “I don’t think we’ve played our best golf yet, especially the boys. But that’s also true for the girls. Sydney has broken 40 a couple of times, and we’ve done some good things.”

With more than a month left in the regular season, Cole isn’t worried. He said the next few weeks will give his players time to refine their games before tournament play begins.

“We have a lot of depth, but we still haven’t lived up to what we can do,” Cole said. “By the time the district tournament comes along, I think we’ll be ready to go and ready to play Anderson County golf.”

The Mavericks and Lady Mavericks will compete Thursday at Oak Ridge Country Club in a match with Clinton, Campbell County and Oak Ridge.
