Wellness room opens for ACHS teachers

The new Gary Terry Wellness Room at Anderson County High School gives teachers a space to relax, collaborate and recharge during the school day. The Gary Terry Wellness Room, named for the school’s athletic director, includes tables, chairs, couches, massage chairs, a microwave, a coffeemaker and a refrigerator stocked with snacks.
School officials said funds for the room were raised through sales of GT Strong T-shirts, which were purchased to support Terry during his battle with cancer.
The room was unveiled during the Anderson County Board of Education meeting on Jan. 8.
Chloe Freeman, student board member for ACHS, announced the opening and described the space as having “everything you can imagine” teachers would want.
“This room serves as a collaborative hub, a place to work on papers, or a much-needed break during their planning period,” the school said in a post on Facebook. The post noted much of the funding came from T-shirt sales in October.
Travis Freeman, principal of Anderson County High School, said the school is seeking donations to help maintain the room, preferably in the form of Walmart gift cards to help stock drinks and snacks.
An announcement posted on Facebook Dec. 29 estimated the cost of maintaining the room at about $250 a month. The school is seeking individuals or families willing to donate $25 gift cards.
“If we could secure 10 families donating $25 cards or 25 families donating $10 cards each month, we can continue to keep the room well-stocked,” the post stated.
“We sincerely appreciate your partnership in supporting and appreciating our teachers.”
