Butter-making event at Norris Dam State Park

Norris Dam State Park is leading a butter-making workshop at the Lenoir Museum/Rice Grist Mill and gift shop.

The event will be on Friday, March 20, at 2:30 p.m. at 2121 Norris Freeway in Norris.

Tickets are $15, and the park requests that people register online on the park’s main website, tnstateparks.com/parks/norris-dam.

“Have you been wanting to expand your traditional homestead practices?” an announcement from the park asked. “This class might be for you. In this class, we will be going over the history of butter making and its prevalence to Appalachian culture. We will also be making butter and buttermilk to take home.”

The class requires the participants to vigorously shake a mason jar for up to 30 minutes. As well, the group will be hand-washing the butter. Make sure to wear clothes that can get dirty.

This program is intended for ages 12 and up. Anyone under the age of 15 must have an adult present with them. To participate, all participants must preregister for this event.
