A man was shot in the chest at the Super 8 Motel on Park Place in Clinton on Sunday, Clinton Police reported.

The Police Department provided details in a post on its Facebook page.

Following reports of a shooting, CPD said officers were dispatched to the motel at about 6:27 p.m.

Upon arrival, officers found a male victim, Danyal Bond, 37, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.

CPD reported that responding officers took suspect Charles Overton, 40, into custody without further incident and transported him to the Anderson County Detention Facility.

According to the department, investigators believe Bond and Overton had an argument outside the motel.

Police allege that Overton then shot Bond in the chest with a .380-caliber handgun.

Bond then allegedly fell to the ground, and Overton lunged at him.

The two men then fought until other people came to the scene police said.

They reportedly separated Bond and Overton and secured the firearm before officers arrived.

“The Clinton Police Department is thankful to the brave citizens who intervened and stopped this incident from being a worse tragedy than it already was!” the department said in its official Facebook post.

As of Monday, March 16, Overton was charged with attempted second-degree murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a handgun while under the influence.

The Police Department stressed that all suspects who have been arrested and charged with crimesare presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
