Fire claims life of 9-year-old girl
A 9-year-old girl died as the result of a fire at a residence on West Broad Street in Clinton on Thursday night, May 21.
The victim, Braniel Jazleen Listenbee, was a cheerleader with the Clinton Athletic Club and a student at Clinton Elementary School.
According to Clinton police, E911 dispatch received a report of smoke coming from the residence at 10:50 p.m. Thursday.
Firefighters with the Clinton Fire Department arrived and found the girl inside the home.
Crews provided care until an Anderson County Emergency Medical Services crew arrived and transported her to Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge.
She was pronounced dead a short time later.
Investigators determined the fire was accidental and originated in the kitchen, according to police.
Cause of death was reported to be smoke inhalation.
“Our deepest sympathies go out to the family involved in this unimaginable tragedy,” the Clinton Police Department stated.

Holley-Gamble Funeral Home posted this notice about the child’s death:
“It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Braniel Jazleen Listenbee, age 9, of Clinton, who passed away on May 22, 2026.
“Braniel was a loving and funny child who was full of love, spirit, and joy. She touched the hearts of those around her and will be deeply missed by her family, friends, classmates, and all who knew her.
“Arrangements and a complete obituary are incomplete at this time and will be posted once they become available.”
“Please keep her family and loved ones in your thoughts and prayers during this heartbreaking time,” the announcement said.
The Clinton Athletic Club described the girl as “a loving and funny child who was full of love, spirit and joy.”
The club said that it plans to raise donations for the family during a flag football event at Dragon Stadium on Sunday afternoon, May 31.
All money donated will go directly to the family.
“There will be no gate fee to attend this weekend’s event,” the club stated.
“We simply ask that those in attendance consider a donation,” the club said.
