Summer concert series begins June 6

Some dancing broke out among the crowd on hand for one of last year’s summer Concerts on the Commons in Norris. Five concerts are scheduled this year, beginning June 5 at 7 p.m. in front of Norris Middle School. (photo:G. Chambers Williams III )
They begin on Friday, June 5, with a performance by the “Lennon Jones Band” on the outdoor stage in front of Norris Middle School, next to the Lions Club Pavilion.
The Lennon Jones Band plays “originals, rock, jazz, improvisation and soul,” according to its description.
The remaining concerts feature:
• June 12: “My New Favorites,” a four-member acoustic group playing original songs, with honky-tonk and Appalachian roots.
• June 26: Liquid Velvet, a 1970s, ’80s and ’90s acoustic classic rock/country group.
• July 4: “110 in the Shade,” a six-member group performing funk, soul, Motown, and R&B songs.
• And July 10: “Small Wars,” an indie/rock/alternative group with original hits from the 1970s to the 2000s.
All of the concerts begin at 7 p.m., and are scheduled to end by 9 p.m.
The Norris Recreation Commission is hosting the concerts.
There is no admission charge, but attendees are requested to bring their own chairs or blankets to sit on in the grassy area in front of the stage, on the grounds of Norris Middle School.
The July 4 concert will be followed by a 20-minute fireworks display.
The late Jack Mitchell, who was a longtime Norris real-estate agent and publisher of the Norris Bulletin, created the concert series 17 years ago.
Powell Clinch Utility District has been the sponsor of the series since its inception, helping to pay the performers for their appearances.
