Lions Club hosts Diabetic Alert Dog fundraiser
The Clinton Lions Club will host a fundraiser Sunday, June 14, to help purchase a new diabetic alert dog for Michael Jones.
The event will take place at Crafters Brew, 826 Oak Ridge Turnpike in Oak Ridge, beginning at 2 p.m.
Jones was diagnosed with diabetes at age 11. For 21 years, he was able to recognize when his blood sugar levels were too high or too low. Later, he developed diabetes unawareness, a condition that prevents individuals from recognizing dangerous changes in blood sugar levels. His physician recommended that he obtain a diabetic alert dog.
Through Diabetic Alert Dogs of America, Jones received Ami, a specially trained dog, in February 2018. Ami was trained to alert him when his blood sugar levels became dangerously high or low.
Ami recently died after being diagnosed with cancer. During her years of service, she helped save Jones’ life on multiple occasions by alerting him to serious blood sugar fluctuations.
A new diabetic alert dog is currently being trained for Jones through Diabetic Alert Dogs of America.
Community members are invited to support the effort by attending the fundraiser or making a donation. Checks should be made payable to Diabetic Alert Dogs of America and include the notation: “Diabetic Alert Dog/Michael J. Jones.”
Donations may be mailed directly to:
Diabetic Alert Dogs of America, 6037 S. Fort Apache Road, Suite 120
Las Vegas, NV 89148
Checks also may be sent to the Clinton Lions Club, which will forward donations to Diabetic Alert Dogs of America along with other funds received for the project.
