Wildcats to host Bertram meet-and-greet

Oak Ridge High School will host a meet-and-greet with new boys basketball Coach Denard Bertram on July 6.

Bertram, who was hired in May to replace Aaron Green as the Wildcats’ coach, will appear at 6 p.m. at the ORHS Amphitheatre.

Bertram previously served as an assistant on Green’s staff from 2011-14 before most recently coaching at Knoxville’s Austin-East High School.

He guided the Roadrunners to two sectional appearances and one trip to the state tournament.

During his four seasons at Austin-East from 2022-26, Bertram compiled an 83-36 record.

The Roadrunners won 19 games last season and reached the semifinals of the Region 2-AAA tournament before falling to Clinton at the Don W. Lockard Gymnasium.

A graduate of Harriman High School, Bertram left Oak Ridge after his first stint with the Wildcats to become an assistant coach at his alma mater.

He replaces Green, who won more than 400 games in 16 seasons at Oak Ridge. Bertram said he hopes to continue the Wildcats’ tradition of success.

“We’re going to build on what Coach Green started,” Bertram said. “I also know about the high academic standards here, the community support and what it’s like to play at Wildcat Arena. I know about it because I grew up and played at Harriman. I’ve been there before, so I know everything this program has to offer.”
