Mavs build momentum heading into postseason
With the postseason approaching, Anderson County High School’s golf teams appear to be finding their stride.
The Mavericks enjoyed a successful week on the course, with the boys winning both of their matches and the Lady Mavericks posting a pair of runner-up finishes.
On Monday, Aug. 31, at Centennial Golf Course in Oak Ridge, the Anderson County boys shot a 148 to finish first in a field of five teams. Christian Academy of Knoxville finished second.
Leading the way for the Mavericks were senior Luke Baldwin and junior Maddox Tackett, who each shot 36. Seniors Hoyt Chadwell and Hunter Turpin each carded a 38.
“Yeah, that was one of our best matches we’ve had so far this year,” Anderson County coach Dallas Cole said. “Oh wow, wow, wow.”
The Lady Mavericks finished second to Alcoa on Aug. 31. Sophomore Audrey Woodson shot a 49, while fellow sophomore Lola Ellis finished with a 51.
The Mavericks returned to action Tuesday, Sept. 1, at Lambert Acres Golf Club in Blount County and again came out on top.
Anderson County shot a team score of 157 to defeat Alcoa, Heritage, Loudon, Sweetwater and Seymour. Loudon finished second.
“Hunter Turpin shot 38 and Luke Baldwin shot 39,” Cole said. “Then Brae Harris, he’s a freshman, shot 45.”
The Lady Mavericks also finished second Tuesday, again trailing Alcoa while finishing ahead of Seymour and Heritage.
“We played better on Tuesday,” Cole said. “Audrey Woodson shot a 39 on Tuesday. And then Lola Ellis also did better, and she shot a 41.
“Our girls have kind of been in a little bit of a slump this year, but they’re kind of figuring it out right here. I’m very happy with them and the work they’re putting in and trying to gain some momentum.”
