Eagles complete remarkable championship run

From a winless start to a championship finish, Jefferson Middle School’s football team turned its season around in impressive fashion.

After opening the 2026 campaign with two consecutive losses, the Eagles soared to seven straight victories, capturing the Tennessee Valley Athletic Conference championship and finishing with a 7-2 record.

Jefferson capped its remarkable turnaround with a convincing 34-6 victory over North Middle School of Lenoir City in the conference championship game Thursday, Oct. 8.

The Eagles punched their ticket to the title game with a 22-8 semifinal victory over Loudon on Thursday, Oct. 1, at Oak Ridge’s Blankenship Field.

“I’m just real proud of our kids; they held it together after the slow start and really came together as a team,” Jefferson head coach Sean Jessie said. “I was really impressed with how our defense played all year. Coach (Jeff) Miner does a wonderful job with them.

“And then the offense, once everybody came back, we got rolling,” the coach added.

Championship game

Nick Fletcher delivered a spectacular performance in Jefferson’s championship victory over North Middle, rushing for 258 yards and four touchdowns on just five carries.

Fletcher also made his presence felt defensively, recording six tackles and recovering two fumbles.

Isaac Hernandez added 89 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries.

Defensively, Krishaun Lee recorded six tackles, while Tyson Helle finished with five. Sable Ricter intercepted a pass.

Brycen Stott contributed a sack and a forced fumble. He also converted four of five extra-point attempts.

Semifinal victory

Fletcher helped power the Eagles past Loudon in the conference semifinals, rushing for 100 yards and a touchdown on nine carries.

Hernandez added 22 yards and a touchdown on eight attempts, while Lee rushed twice for 35 yards.

Hernandez and Lee each added a successful 2-point conversion.

Quarterback Braylon Knipp completed three of five passes for 74 yards and a touchdown.

Helle caught all three passes, including the touchdown reception.

Back-to-back city champions

Before making their championship run through the conference playoffs, the Eagles also secured bragging rights closer to home.

Jefferson captured its second consecutive Oak Ridge city championship with a 20-0 shutout of rival Robertsville on Thursday, Sept. 24, at Blankenship Field.

Fletcher led the ground attack with 156 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries, while Hernandez rushed 10 times for 91 yards and a touchdown.

But it was Jefferson’s defense that drew particularly high praise from Jessie.

“Our defense played lights out,” he said.

Fletcher finished with three tackles, including one for loss, and forced a fumble.

Karson Ball recorded two tackles for loss and forced a fumble, while Ricter came away with an interception.

Stott added two sacks, and Helle blocked a field goal to help preserve the shutout.

The victory over Robertsville was another important step in a season that began with adversity but ended with Jefferson standing atop the conference.

From an 0-2 start to seven consecutive victories, the Eagles saved their best football for when it mattered most.
