High drama at 130 Maverick Circle

Anderson County High School opened District 3-AAA play Monday night when the Mavs hosted Knoxville Central High School. The game was everything good about baseball: A pitching duel through five innings, classic base running, and despair followed by redemption. Scoreless through five innings, the Mavs plated two runs in the

bottom of the fifth and one more in the lower half of the sixth playing “small ball.” The Bobcats rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh, getting a little help from a bobbled double play exchange from second baseman Jonathan Hodge. With the score tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh, the Mavs had a runner at second — Hunter Melton — with two outs when (because this is how it should be) Hodge stepped to the plate. He singled home Melton and the Mavs took a key district win. Hodge (with batting helmet) is congratulated by teammates Caleb Wilhoit (left) and Ryan Moog after getting the game winning RBI.
