Water line breaks: No biggie, but spectacular

Water gushes while CUB crews put a ring on a water line break Sunday on Riverside Drive Sunday evening.
Water line breaks happen all the time. There’s nothing really dramatic about them, but they do look spectacular sometimes.

“This one was like a pin hole in a water hose,” Clinton Utilities Board Manager Greg Fay said.

This particular pin hole happened on a service that “just split” around 8 p.m. Sunday.

The fountain effect happened when CUB crews put a new ring on the line to stop the leak.

It’s so common an occurrence that CUB crews had it fixed in 30 minutes and not a single household lost water.

“There were some homes that experienced lower water pressure, but no outages,” Fay said.

“But we get breaks like this every day,” he said. “Most times you wouldn’t even know there was a leak.

Fay said CUB is replacing older lines — Clintonians might have noticed recent work on Main Street — and until all older lines are attended to, there will water lines breaking.

“They can even be caused by vibrations,” Fay said.

Fay even described these breakages as “unbelievably boring.”
