Lady Dragons drop games to Central, Sweetwater

Clinton’s Karleigh York dives safely back to first base following a pick-off attempt against Anderson County last Tuesday.
The Knox Central Lady Bobcats spoiled Senior Night for the Clinton Lady Dragons on Wednesday night as they downed the home team 8-2.

Central got on the scoreboard with a run in the top of the third.

Clinton took the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth when Sophie Seivers doubled and later scored on an RBI-double by Karleigh York. Kara Bradley picked up an RBI on a groundout.

The Lady Bobcats reclaimed the lead in the top of the fifth when they scored twice to go up 3-2. They added four in the sixth and one in the seventh.

Skylar Newby took the loss as she pitched seven innings and allowed three earned runs on 11 hits. The defense committed seven errors behind her.

Lexie Cochran went 2-4 with two stolen bases. Seivers was 1-4 with a double and York was 1-4 with a double and an RBI. Bradley had an RBI.

“We came out kind of flat but we got a spark and took the lead. Then we had a bad inning and couldn’t recover,” said Lecia Watson, head coach of the Lady Dragons.

The Lady Dragons fell at Sweetwater Friday night by a score of 12-6.

After Clinton jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, the Lady Wildcats scored four in the bottom of the inning to go up 4-2.

Clinton tied the game in the third and the score remained deadlocked until the fifth when Sweetwater exploded for seven runs. The Lady Dragons plated a pair in the sixth but it was not nearly enough to rally.

Bradley suffered the loss as she pitched five innings and allowed six runs on 13 hits.

At the plate, Halie Martin was 2-2 with a double and an RBI while Newby went 2-3 with a double and an RBI.

York also had two hits while Seivers went 1-3 with a double and Lacey Smith added a hit.

“It’s the same story for us three games in a row — one bad inning. We had two outs, committed an error, and that started that one bad inning. But we did hit the ball a little better,” Watson said.

The Lady Dragons open play in the district tournament on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Halls against the number two seed Halls Lady Red Devils. Should they win they would face the winner of the Gibbs-Knox Central game on Monday at 8 p.m. A loss would send them into the loser’s bracket to face the loser of the Gibbs-Knox Central game on Friday at 8 p.m.
