Mavericks advance
The Mavericks fell to Powell by a score of 1-0 at Gibbs on Sunday afternoon in a game that pushed back two days because of heavy rain.
Anderson County loaded the bases in the first inning when Rhett Bowling singled. Andy Fox bunted Bowling to second and Trey Noe reached on a two-out walk as did Zeke Meyers but the Mavericks could not cash in.
Jonas Payne led-off for the Panthers and crushed a solo homerun to left center to give Powell a 1-0 lead.
Anderson County starter Ryan Moog only allowed two more hits the rest of the way — a first inning single by Parker Stinnett and a sixth inning double by Payne.
The Mavericks put runners on first and second in the second inning when Hunter Melton reached after being hit by a pitch with two outs and Bowling walked. Again, Anderson County left runners stranded.
The Maverick’s Denver Hubbard led-off the third with a base hit but he too was left on base. Thomas Sexton drew a one-out walk in the fourth but that was the extent of the threat. Bowling opened the fifth with a base hit and Caleb Wilhoit reached on a one-out single in the sixth but neither base runner made it into scoring position.
Melton drew a one-out walk in the sixth but was cut down on a game-ending double play.
Moog took the tough loss as he allowed one run on three hits over six innings of work. He also struck out eight.
Bowling went 2-3 with a walk to lead the Mavericks. Hubbard finished 1-3 and Wilhoit was 1-1.
“Ryan Moog pitched a great game and our defense made all of the routine plays. What more could you ask for? But we just couldn’t pick up the big two-out hit today,” said Ben Downs, head coach of the Mavericks.
On Monday evening, Anderson County beat Knox Central 5-3 to eliminate the Bobcats from the tournament.
Chase Elkins pitched five and two-thirds for the win.
Fox had two hits for Anderson County and Noe drove in two runs.
No further stats were available at press time.
“We played well. We played a lot like we did yesterday [against Powell] but we hit the ball. That was the difference in the game,” said Downs.
The Mavericks were set to face Gibbs (at Gibbs) at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday in an elimination game.
