Lady Mavs season ends

The Anderson County Lady Mavericks came out on the wrong end of a one-run game as they fell to Halls by a score of 3-2 on Wednesday evening.

The loss ended the season for Anderson County.

The Lady Mavs threatened early as Maddie Sickau led-off with a base hit and Molly Muncy followed with a single, but a fielder’s choice and double play later, the scoring threat was erased.

The Lady Devils used a one-out double and two-out single to score a run in the first.

Halls had back-to-back doubles in the second as they scored twice to extend their lead to 3-0.

In the top of the third, Sickau smacked a one-out double and Muncy followed with a base hit. Gracie Webb then launched double to score both runners to make it a 3-2 game.

Anderson County starter Hannah Bruce gave up three hits and no runs the rest of the way. Unfortunately for the Lady Mavs, Halls only surrendered one hit and a total of two base runners after the third inning.

In her last game for Anderson County, Muncy was 2-2 with a walk and a run scored.

Sickau finished 2-4 with a double and a run scored.

Webb was 1-3 with a double and two RBI.

Bruce took the loss as she went six innings and allowed three runs on seven hits.

“We were error-free. Hannah threw the ball pretty well. They [Halls] just executed a couple of times with runners on,” said Allen Russell, head coach of the Lady Mavs.

“We said goodbye tonight to three seniors — Molly Muncy, Kelsey Giles, and Kayla Kennedy. I thank them and appreciate them working their tails off. It’s rough. You see girls day in and day out bust their tail for you, some not even getting to play but they would run through a brick wall for you and it means a lot,” he said.

“I told the rest of the girls to remember this feeling. Every year we’ve taken steps to get better. Those seniors went 10-16 as freshmen. This season they were 24-13. That’s a pretty big jump,” Russell said.

Each game the Lady Mavs played in the district tournament was decided by one run — a 5-4 loss to Karns, a 1-0 win over Oak Ridge, and Wednesday’s loss to the Lady Red Devils.
