Oak Ridge 30
The Oak Ridge Wildcats ran their season record to 4-2 with a 30-14 win over visiting Sevier County last Friday night.
The Wildcats opened scoring with a 40-yard pick six by Jaycen McGhee.
Carson McGhee added the extra point and Oak Ridge led 7-0 with 10:55 to go in the first quarter.
The Smoky Bears answered with a touchdown and extra point to tie the game at the 5:03 mark of the first quarter.
Following an Oak Ridge punt which pinned Sevier County deep in its own end, a bad snap resulted in a safety, giving the Wildcats a 9-7 with 1:18 left in the first quarter.
Kai’Reese Pendergrass returned the ensuing free kick 85 yards for a touchdown. The McGhee PAT pushed the Oak Ridge lead to 16-7 with 1:02 left in the first quarter.
The second quarter was scoreless.
The Wildcats scored a touchdown when quarterback Johnny Stewart found Jeremy Mitchell on a 57-yard touchdown pass. After McGhee’s extra point, the Wildcats led 23-7 with 6:38 left in the third quarter.
The Smoky Bears answered with a quick touchdown to cut the Oak Ridge lead to 23-14 with 4:32 left in the third quarter.
The Wildcats ended scoring when Stewart scored on a seven-yard run with 9:36 left in the game. The extra point by McGhee made the final 30-14.
Stewart finished 12-20 passing for 209 yards and a touchdown. He also ran 18 times for 42 and a score.
The Wildcats (4-2, 2-0 in Region 3-5A) host region rival Karns (2-4, 0-3 in region action) on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Lenoir City 22
Powell 42
The Powell Panthers made a statement last Friday night when they beat Lenoir City 42-2 and that statement is simple: The Panthers are a legitimate contender in Region 3-5A.
After a scoreless first quarter, Powell outscored Lenoir City 13-6 in the second quarter for a halftime lead.
They exploded for 23 points in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.
Each team added a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Powell sophomore quarterback Walker Trusley was 14-19 for 239 yards and a touchdown passing. He also carried the ball eight times for 50 yards and a score.
Trusley completed passes to seven different receivers.
Junior Riley Bryant rushed twice for 78 yards and a touchdown. He also had nine receptions for 124 yards and a touchdown.
He finished with 224 all-purpose yards.
Bailor Walker accounted for 161 all-purpose yards (122 coming on kick returns). He also had three tackles and an interception.
Senior Bryson Reed had nine tackles with three quarterback sacks.
Junior M. Hipshire had 10 total tackles with a quarterback sack.
The Panthers (5-1 overall, 2-1 in Region 3-5A) have a huge test Friday when they visit region rival Campbell County (4-1, 0-1 in region play).
Kick-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
Oliver Springs 10
Claiborne 12
The Oliver Springs Bobcats lost a heartbreaker on the road to Claiborne by a score of 12-10 last Friday.
After making the long trek to New Tazewell, the Bobcats took a 7-6 lead in the first quarter when Dillon Walls scored on a one-yard run and Zack Brooks kicked the extra point.
Oliver Springs added a 33-yard field goal by Brooks in the second quarter and led 10-6 at halftime.
Both teams were scoreless in the third quarter and for much of the fourth. The Bulldogs — playing as the “Blue Devils” in a throwback game in honor of the old Claiborne County High School — managed to get the late lead and win when junior running back Bryce Laws scored his second touchdown of the game.

The Bobcats (0-5, 0-1 in Region 2-1A) will be back in action on Friday when they host Harriman (1-5, 0-2 in region play) in a key region game.
