Lady Mavs pull away for win

The Anderson County Lady Mavericks picked up a big district road win at Clinton on Monday night.

The final score was 53-39.

The two teams traded baskets throughout the first quarter as Maci Houser, Brooklyn McCoy, Mollie Longmire, and Hannah Freeman scored for Anderson County.

Amaya Whitt and Nikki Jones did the scoring for Clinton and Cierra Bunch dropped in a 3-pointer at the buzzer to pull the Lady Dragons to within one as the Lady Mavs led 13-12 after one quarter of play.

Danyel Joy knocked down a trey to give Clinton a 15-13 lead to open the second quarter. Later in the quarter, Alayjah Whitt hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Lady Dragons a 23-18 lead.

A 3-pointer by Houser cut the Lady Dragons’ lead to 23-21 at the half.

The Lady Mavs’ Tea Hickson opened the third quarter with a basket. She had eight points in the quarter and helped lead her team into a 33-29 lead to open the fourth quarter.

Kinley Martin hit a 3-pointer to pull Clinton to within three at 35-32 with 5:52 left in the game but Houser responded with three consecutive baskets as part of a 15-2 run that sealed the win for Anderson County.

“Clinton has improved. They are a lot better team and I knew that going in. We started off slow but we picked it up in the second half, especially the fourth quarter,” said Mike Ellis, head coach of the Lady Mavs.

“Hickson did a great job in second half after getting into foul trouble in the first half. She missed half of the first quarter and all of the second. That’s one of the reasons we started off slow. When she’s on the floor she’s a big part of our offense but they all worked hard tonight. I’m proud of them. It’s a big win,” he said.

“We got outworked and outhustled. We didn’t play our game tonight. We didn’t show up like it was a rival game night. We just weren’t here. I haven’t seen what I saw tonight all year long. Against Oak Ridge we still had a lot of fight and hustle. It was like tonight we just gave up,” said Alicia Phillips, head coach of the Lady Dragons.

Hickson led all scorers with 15 points, all coming in the second half. McCoy had 14 points for the Lady Mavs while Houser had 11.

Jones led the Lady Dragons with 11 points while Amaya Whitt had nine points.

Woeful shooting helped doom the Lady Mavs last Tuesday at Campbell County.

The Lady Cougars won 62-21.

Campbell County jumped out to a 20-6 lead in the first quarter as McCoy and Hickson scored for Anderson County.

The Lady Cougars extended their lead to 41-10 at halftime as the Lady Mavs were ice cold from the floor.

Anderson County continued their offensive struggles in the third quarter as Callie Bowing joined the scoring for the Lady Mavs. Campbell County managed to build a 51-16 lead at the end of three quarters.

The Lady Mavs could make up any ground in the fourth quarter and dropped their district opener.

“It’s safe to say we had a poor shooting night but Campbell County has a really good team,” Ellis said.

McCoy led Anderson County with 14 points.

Longmire opened the second half with 3-pointer as Anderson County went on an 8-0 run. Houser added six more points and the Lady Mavs led 32-16 at the end of three quarters.

Anderson County outscored the Lady Bobcats 14-3 in the fourth quarter and went on to pick up their first district win.

“We were sluggish to start the game but we finished strong on each end of the floor,” Ellis said.
