No evidence county server breached

Anderson County Sheriff’s office has released a summary of the unauthorized server access investigation that has been ongoing since 2016.

The report contained a detailed timeline of instances starting with a complaint initiated on August 3, 2016 by the Human Resources Director at the time, Russell Bearden.

Bearden alleged in his complaint to the Sheriffs office that he believed that unknown individuals had gained access to the Anderson County Government main and/or badge access servers.

Bearden also stated individuals possibly obtained, removed or altered data.

That kicked off a two-year investigation into the server security and access in Anderson County Government buildings.

In conclusion, investigator Don Scuglia, said that after examining and interpreting all the data received, as well as being made aware of the debauched state of the server and its security at the time of the complaint, he could nd no evidence to support that Anderson County Government fell victim to an unauthorized intrusion into any of the servers.

He also stated that he was unable to nd any evidence to indicate criminal activities surrounding exltration of data from Anderson County servers.

The case is closed.

This alleged breach highlighted the vulnerability of the computer system and network.

The overall state of security of the computer network was dismal for many reasons (fully outlined in the 25-page summary).

Making improvements to Anderson County servers to prevent potential breaches has been a hot topic in Anderson County meetings and even though there is no proof of criminal activity, updates to the servers and emphasis on security are all but certain.
