FFA marks 20 years of donating plants

Through Community Action, Anderson County gives to families in need

This year marks the 20th year that the Anderson County FFA Chapter has donated free vegetable plants to needy families in Anderson County.

“These plants are grown by our students and distributed through the Anderson County Community Action Commission,” said Phil Warfield who is Anderson County FFA Advisor, ACCTC Agriculture Instructor.

Warfield also mentioned that their annual number of donated plants have ranged from 2500 to 7000 plants yearly. “Our agriculture students participate in giving back to the community and help those less fortunate. This is but one of numerous community service projects we conduct.”

Amanda Massengill, also FFA advisor at ACCTC, is in charge of the spring greenhouse production.

In 2017, more than 135 households received plants and produced about $425.00 worth of vegetables that were eaten fresh, frozen, canned, and/or dried for a total value of $57,375 said Angie Price Simonds who is Program Coordinator of Anderson County Community Action Commission and The Green Thumb Garden Program.

This program is funded by United Way with additional funds from churches, civic groups, Department of Human Services, ACCTC, and local businesses.
