Mavs will travel to East Ridge for region affair

The Anderson County Mavericks (6-0, 2-0) defeated the Heritage Mountaineers 55-28 on Friday.

This week, they prepare to travel to Chattanooga to face off against the East Ridge Pioneers (0-5, 0-1), in Region 2 4A play.

The Mavs’ have been unstoppable this year, as Anderson County is averaging an outstanding 44.7 points per game.

Furthermore, while many teams come out of the gates strong and fall off, Anderson County improves throughout the game—averaging 17.5 points in the third quarter alone.

The Mavs’ high powered offense is a coach’s dream, that features an air raid assault that can break down a defense with short, bullet passes or deep bombs. Combine that with a duel threat ground and pound running game that keeps defenses on their heels, and it is easy to see why containing the Anderson County offense is far from an easy task. Senior gunslinger Stanton Martin is having a Mr. Football caliber season, with 1,225 yards and 22 touchdowns.

Additionally, Martin has plenty of weapons around him. Senior wide out Michael Carroll is Martin’s favorite target, and has 31 receptions for 491 yards and 10 touchdowns. Senior running backs Marquis Gallaher and Ryan Moog are a dangerous two-headed snake, and have combined for 917 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Defensively, Anderson County’s opponents average 18.5 per game, which is perfectly fine if the offense continues to put up 40-plus.

Anderson County’s defense as a whole is solid. The Mavs’ secondary has been outstanding to this point, as opponents average only 88.7 passing yards per game.

Complimented by a stout defensive line and versatile linebacker core that are hard to puncture, as opponents are averaging 130.2 rushing yards per game.

To put this in perspective, Anderson County’s opponents combined have rushed the ball three more times than the Mavs this season, but average 62-yards less per game.

Sophomore Stone Cummins leads the Anderson County defense with 41 total tackles, eight tackles-for-loss, and two sacks.

Gallaher follows with 27 tackles, eight tackles-for-loss, and two sacks.

Carroll leads the secondary with 18 tackles, one tackle-for-loss, three interceptions and five pass breakups.

This week will be Anderson County’s second straight week facing a win-less opponent. The only difference is that East Ridge is a region opponent.

East Ridge has given up at least 20 points in every game they have played, and failed to put over 18 points on the board.

Expect to see another big win that allows the Mavs explore their depth chart for the second straight week.

Anderson County should be 7-0 this Saturday, as they head into their bye-week.
