Blaze split on the court

The Clinton City Blaze basketball teams opened their season last week in Jacksboro with mixed results.

The boys team picked up a 34-20 victory over Campbell County while the girls squad came up on the short end of a 31-27 overtime decision on Thursday, Oct. 18.

For the boys, Andrew McAmis scored 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

In the girls game, the Blaze’s Josie Moody scored nine points.

The Clinton Blaze teams are comprised of fifth and sixth graders who attend Clinton City Schools.

Clinton City Schools athletic director E.T. Stamey said that he relishes the opportunity to see the city’s elementary school student-athletes compete in an organized league for the first time.

“This is the first opportunity for these kids to compete in organized athletics,” Stamey said. “This the first time that they can compete for a school team. This is the first time when somebody wins and somebody losses.”

The two Clinton basketball teams played their home opener against the Tennessee Jays on Monday, Oct. 22.

The Lady Blaze won 31-14 behind 13 points from Braylen Hall and 12 from Josie Moody.

The Blaze beat the Tennessee Jays 35-21 with Hayden Craig scoring 18. Jack “Hammer” Wilson had eight points and 10 rebounds.

Upcoming Schedule: The Blaze teams continue their homestand this week. Clinton returns to action Thursday when they host First Baptist Academy of Powell with the city’s fifth-grade players taking on the Eagles at Clinton City Gym. The girls team hosts the Lady Dream Monday while the boys squad hosts the Tennessee Outlaws.

The two teams will also be at home on Tuesday as they entertain Coalfield Middle School.

Cross Country runner competes at State Championships in Knoxville: Laci Percival and 254 East Tennessee runners competed in the State Championship Meet at Knoxville’s Victor Ashe Park on Saturday.

Percival completed the course in 6 minutes, 52 seconds. She finished in 57th place and qualified for the upcoming national championships.
