It’s a ‘streaky’ business

Mavs’s mini win streak halted by Oakdale

Anderson County’s Brady Garren drives to the basket against oakdale last tuesday. oakdale snapped a three-game win streak for the Mavericks with a come-from-behind win.
Last Tuesday, the Anderson County Mavericks and Lady Mavericks tipped off their first home games of the 2018-2019 season against the Oakdale Eagles.

The Lady Mavs would face the Lady Eagles to start the night.

The Lady Mavs got out to an early 25-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. Oakdale failed to close the gap.

The Anderson County Lady Mavs would cruise to a 57-31 win over the visiting Lady Eagles.

The Anderson County boys would hit the hardwood next, but did not have as easy of a time as the Lady Mavs did.

The Mavs took a three point lead into the break, but the size and depth of the Eagles showed in the second half. The Mavs would drop their home opener 54-42 to Oakdale.

The Lady Mavs were dominant in the first quarter against the Lady Eagles.

Senior guard Maci Houser had two triples and two field goals, which led the Lady Mavs with ten points in the first quarter.

Junior Brooklin McCoy was a big factor inside for the Lady Mavs. In the first quarter, McCoy had four points from the floor, a made free throw, two steals, two assists, and one rebound.

The second quarter was all-Anderson County. The Lady Mavs put 20 more points on the board, yet only allowed three. At halftime, the Lady Mavs led 45-13. Anderson County Lady Mavs’ head coach Mike Ellis was able to go to his bench in the second half. While it seemed that the Lady Eagles might begin to close the gap heading into the fourth quarter, Anderson County’s 49-27 lead was too much. McCoy added four of Anderson County’s eight points in the fourth quarter, and the Lady Mavs wrapped up the win. Houser led the Lady Mavs with 12 points, and Junior Tea’ Hickson finished with 9.

The Mavs came into the Oakdale matchup on a three-game win streak. However, the Eagles would steal an away win against the Mavs. Sophomore guard Ryland Ford would come off the bench to give Anderson County a spark. Ford would lead the Mavs with 3 points in the first quarter, and Anderson County would lead 9-5 going into the second quarter. The Mavs had five players contribute buckets in the quarter, and took a 19-16 advantage into halftime. Senior guard Harrison Ogburn would contribute two big treys in the third quarter, but Anderson County would trail by six, 37-31, heading into the fourth quarter. The size of Oakdale, and their ability to get to the free throw line would be too much for the Mavs in the closing quarter, and the Eagles would escape with a 12-point win over the Mavs.

Anderson County’s next test will come this Friday at “The Battle of the Bridge—Basketball style.” The Lady Mavericks will host Clinton at six o’clock, and the boys will follow. This will be a great early season test for all four teams, and mark the first district games for Anderson County.
