Mavericks play in Maryville

The Anderson County Basketball Mavericks and Lady Mavericks traveled to Blount County over the weekend, to participate in the Maryville High School Christmas basketball tournament.

The 2018 Renasant Bank Christmas Tournament was a loaded competition, full of great teams — Anderson County, Maryville, Fulton, Farragut, and Powell, among others.

In the boys’ first round, Anderson County (11-6, 5-2) drew Davy Crockett High School. The Mavs would advance to the winner’s bracket semifinals, with a 57-50 win.

Anderson County advanced to a contest against the host, Maryville High School. The Red Rebels would down the Mavs 75-51.

Anderson County would face Jefferson County High School in the third place contest, but the results would not be available by press time.

Against Davy Crockett, the Mavs came out firing on all cylinders. Senior Stanton Martin had a great weekend scoring the basketball.

Martin would need a heat check early on in the ballgame. In the first quarter, Martin went 8-of-9 from the floor and scored 16 of Anderson County’s 26 first quarter points.

The Mavs opened up a 18-point lead by halftime, and led going into the break 37-29.

However, Davy Crockett opened up the second half with a 10-2 run, and tied the game at 39-39. After being held to only six points in the third quarter, Anderson County held Davy Crockett to only five points in the fourth quarter. The defensive effort in the fourth quarter would lead the Mavs to victory.

Stanton Martin would finish with a game-high 21 points, and Senior Logan Berry would put up 12 points.

Against the Rebels, Anderson County would never lead.

Maryville opened the game with a 21-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Senior Harrison Ogburn, along with Stanton Martin would get Anderson County going offensively — combining for 14 points.

However, Maryville’s six three-point makes in the first half were brutal on the visiting Mavs. Anderson County trailed at the half 40-21.

The Rebels’ barrage from downtown did not lose tempo in the second half — as they hit six more from beyond the arch.

With a 65-35 advantage heading into the fourth quarter, Maryville cruised to the win.

The Rebels had five players with ten-plus points, and went 12-for-22 from beyond the arch, as a team.

For Anderson County, Stanton Martin led the Mavs in scoring once again, with 18 points.

The Lady Mavs received the hardest draw at the Maryville Christmas Tournament—drawing Maryville, then Fulton.

The Anderson County ladies were defeated by the Lady Rebels 69-33, on Thursday. On Friday, the Lady Mavs faced Knoxville basketball powerhouse Fulton High School.

Anderson County would go on a 20-9 run to upset the Lady Falcons, 54-53.

A huge win for the Lady Mavs.

On Saturday, The Anderson County ladies played their last game against the Lady Eagles of Cosby, but the results on that contest were unavailable by press time.

Both Anderson County teams will focus on making improvements before returning to the hardwood Jan. 4, at Oliver Springs High School.

Tip for the girls’ contest is scheduled for 6:00, and the boys will follow.
