The Anderson County Lady Mavericks’ 2018-2019 campaign came to an end last week.

The Lady Mavs dropped their last three games to three top tier opponents, and finished the season with a 17-16 overall record.

After a loss to Campbell County in the semifinal, Anderson County’s 48-39 loss to the Powell High School Lady Panthers (22-9) in the District 3-AAA Tournament Consolation game meant that they would finish fourth. The Lady Mavs then had to travel to Maryville High School to face the second-ranked team in the state and the District 4-AAA Tournament Champions.

In the Quarterfinals of the Region 2-AAA Tournament, the Lady Rebels (29-2) eliminated Anderson County from TSSAA Division 1-AAA postseason play, defeating the Lady Mavs 82-59.

Last Tuesday, the Lady Mavs took an early lead over Powell.

Tea’ Hickson’s five points and Juliann Smith’s three first quarter points gave Anderson County an 8-6 advantage heading into the second quarter.

The Lady Mavs would extend their lead in the second stanza behind Brooklin McCoy and Callie Bowling, who would each put up five points on the board for Anderson County. At the halftime break, Anderson County led Powell 23-12.

Powell’s Bailey Trumm, an Appalachian State University commit, scored nine of the Lady Panthers’ 12 first half points, and would continue to be a thorn in Anderson County’s side in the third quarter.

The Lady Panthers’ first half shooting woes would dramatically come to an end, and Trumm would lead the way.

Powell smacked Anderson County with 23 points in the third quarter, and Trumm would contribute for ten of their 23 points.

Maci Houser would do her part offensively in the third quarter for Anderson County—hitting two from downtown and sinking two attempts from the stripe for eight third quarter points. Yet, Powell’s big quarter would give the Lady Panthers momentum, and a 35-33 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The Lady Mavs’ failed to bounce back and unfortunately would go into a shooting slump throughout the fourth quarter. Houser and McCoy each tallied three points, but those six points were all that Anderson County could put on the scoreboard in the final quarter.

Trumm would add five points in the fourth, and led the Lady Panthers to their third win over Anderson County this season. Bailey Trumm would finish the night with six triples, and a game-high 24 points.

For the Lady Mavs, Maci Houser would hit three from beyond the arch and led with a team-high 11 points. Brooklin McCoy followed closely behind her fellow senior with 10 points.

This past Friday, the Lady Mavs battled their way to a first half lead over the Lady Rebels. In the first quarter, Anderson County would sink four treys. Houser would hit two of the four, and led the Lady Mavs with six first quarter points. However, Maryville would show their quality early in the ballgame.

Maryville is led by six-foot one-inch center Lindsey Taylor, a Furman University commit. The Lady Rebels found Taylor early and often and she quickly proved to be elite. Taylor led Maryville to a 17-13 advantage at the end first quarter, with ten points.

Because of Taylor’s presence in the paint defensively, it seemed that the Lady Mavs would live or die from beyond the arc. However, in the second quarter, Anderson County attacked the basket aggressively off the dribble, which led to fouls on Maryville. In the second quarter alone, the Lady Mavs made five trips to the charity stripe, and converted on eight-of-ten attempts. Also, Brooklin McCoy would get involved offensively and lead the Lady Mavs with eight second quarter points.

Maryville struggled to hit shots in the second quarter, which not only allowed Anderson County to hang around, but also allowed Anderson County to go on a 6-0 run to end the quarter and gain the lead. At the half, the upset-minded Lady Mavs led the second-ranked team in the state 29-28.

During the first few minutes of the third quarter, both teams traded punches possession-by-possession, and neither team controlled the momentum. However, the turning point of the contest would happen midway through the quarter.

The Lady Rebels would come out of a timeout and completely take control of the ballgame. From the midway point of the third quarter to the midway point of the fourth quarter, Maryville would go on a blistering 22-3 run to put Anderson County out of reach and seal the victory for the hosts.

Maryville’s Lindsey Taylor scored 22 second half points for the Lady Rebels, and finished the ballgame with a double-double. Taylor racked up a whopping 36 points, ten boards, two assists, and one steal in the win.

In the finale of their Anderson County careers, Brooklin McCoy led the Lady Mavs with 19 points and Maci Houser followed with 15 points. Also, Shae Berry would contribute 15 points for the Lady Mavs.
