Scarboro Community Alumni Association announces scholarship recipients

The Scarboro Community Alumni Association (SCAA) held a reception to honor their 2019 Scholarship recipients on Aug. 4, at Spurgeon Chapel A.M.E.Zion Church.

The recipients were selected by their essay submissions on how these funds would assist them financially.

The deadline for the Scholarship was July 8,2019.

“It was difficult as essays were well written and expressive, “ said Tina Henderson-Porter, however the selection committee determine those who met all requirements of the essay application were awardees.”

The following students or guardian represented were presented book scholarships in the amount of $250.00 by Vice President John Spratling and treasurer, Deborah Booker:

Makiya Garrett; Tusculum University

Jadakiss Guinn; Tennessee Tech

Alexis Hammond; Auburn University

Edward Jackson; Belmont University

Kai’Reese Pendergrass; Carson-Newman University

Javonte Thomas; Bryan College

Kjuan Stacy-Wright; Tennessee Wesleyna University

Spratling expounded on the significance of them achieving more and how important it is for them to give back to ther community which is one of the requirements of the Scholarship.

He also shared SCAA Vision: To see every boy and girl in the community reaches his/her potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens and challenges each recipient to do their best at college excelling beyond their capacity.

Both John Spratling and Deborah Booker challenged the recipients and their parents to keep SCAA executive committee members apprised of their progress. Know that they will be called on in 2020 to carry out some task as SCAA commemorates the biennial Scarboro reunion.

SCAA’s mission is to empower the community to become responsible citizens and stewards of the community through community service projects and support services and to affirm the integrity of our neighborhood in an effort to enhance Individual self-worth.

Membership is $30 a year and half of the dues go toward scholarship.
