Claxton Squares spaghetti supper planned Sept. 9
Claxton Country Squares will host a free spaghetti dinner at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, September 9 at the Claxton Community Center. The spaghetti dinner will serve as a kick-off event for new dance lesson classes and is open to the public.
“Our club uses the annual spaghetti dinner as a way to invite the community to explore square dancing as a new acitivity,” said Karen Allison, one of the organizers. “Square and line dancing can be a lot of fun and is great exercise for both young and old.”
According to Allison, the exercise can be as high or low impact as the participant wants. “A younger dancer can be very energetic while a senior may enjoy a lower impact pace,” she added. “Either way it’s always a lot of fun.”
According to information provided by the club, a square dancer can expect to burn up to 400 calories during a half hour of dancing, the side-to-side movements can help strengthen weight-bearing bones, and the social elements can help contribute to a positive outlook and self-esteem.
Square dancing has evolved over the years. “The music can be modern rock, pop, easy-listening or traditional blue grass and country,” Allison stated. “It’s really as easy as walking.”
