FFA teams win silver at nationals

Members of the Anderson County FFA Chapter competed in two National contest this past month. These events were held in conjunction with the 92nd National FFA Convention and Expo in Indianapolis, Ind.



FFA Food Science and Technology CDE Team



The National FFA Food Science and Technology Career Development Event (CDE) had 41 teams from across the nation.

This team, led by advisor and coach Philip Warfield, was awarded the Silver Team Medal. Rebecca Byrge received a gold individual award, Tamara Heath and Brookelyn Housley received a silver individual award and Jessica Kiser received a bronze individual award.

The National FFA Food Science and Technology CDE is designed to test a student’s basic knowledge of food science as well as the student’s ability to apply this knowledge to practical situations. Each team participates in a timed team product development project, and each individual participates in practicums involving food sensory evaluation and food safety and sanitation as well as a written exam.

FFA Agronomy CDE Team



The National Agronomy competition had 43 teams to compete. This team, led by advisor and coach Philip Warfield, was awarded the Silver Team Medal.

This contest allows FFA members to demonstrate their skills in solving complex problems related to crop production, agricultural knowledge and skills in the area of Agronomy. Additional activities include crop, weed, insect and seed identification, crop disorder identification; crop and seed judging and evaluation; and grain grading. A written examination was included along with a team problem solving competition.
