The Cars for Canines event held Aug. 22 at Melton Lake Park welcomed approximately 2,000 guests and 90 cars.

Explore Oak Ridge hosted the inaugural event to provide the Oak Ridge community an afternoon of fun with a car show, live music, food trucks, and pet friendly vendors.

Additionally, the event worked to raise money for the Oak Ridge Animal Shelter and Humane Society of Anderson County.

Countless furry friends roamed the event, including dogs for adoption from both shelters. Due to the high attendance, many guests were able to see dogs who need homes. Upon completion of the event, four dogs were adopted into new families.

Thanks to participating vendors, Summer Knights Cruisers, and sponsors, Explore Oak Ridge was able to donate $1,250 to the Oak Ridge Animal Shelter and Humane Society of Anderson County. Hannah Fatheree, event manager for Explore Oak Ridge, said, “We were blown away by the support and money raised for the shelters. To hear four dogs were welcomed into new homes only added to the success of the event.”

Both shelters have limited capacity and encourage residents looking for four-legged friends to “adopt, don’t shop.” The Humane Society of Anderson County is open Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m.-noon. The Oak Ridge shelter is open Tuesday-Friday 11 a.m.-6 p.m. by appointment only.

Explore Oak Ridge plans to bring back Cars for Canines in 2021 with the hopes of growing the event.
