Blaze pick up a mascot

  • Joey Smith with the Blaze mascot he created

  • The yet to be named Blaze mascot and Clinton City Schools Athletic Director E.T. Stamey ham it up for the camera.

It’s not every day you get to read a story about a school mascot.

Unless the mascot got in a fight with a game official (and that has happened).

Or if the mascot in question changes uniform colors and/or design (and that has happened).

It was announced last week the Clinton City Schools’ Blaze have added a mascot.

The system announced on its Facebook page last week that Joey Smith, one of the system’s biggest fans, had “created” a Blaze mascot — actually made it.

“I told Kelly Johnson (Directon of Clinton Schools) that I wanted to donate a mascot this year,” Smith said.

Smith makes a contribution to the school system annually.

He quickly found out that getting a mascot uniform was anywhere from $3,000 to $5,000 from a “professional” mascot company.

And remember this: A Blaze player is a future Dragon (so a fire symbol is appropriate).
