After weeks in quarantine, Anderson County again took to the court on Friday, Dec. 11 to face off against Campbell County, walking away with an 85-53 win.

AC took an early lead, finishing the first quarter 28-12 over the Cougars to surprise Coach Derek Wallace.

“It was good,” said Wallace. “Definitely started a little differently than I expected. They were cold and we got on them pretty quickly.”

The Cougars showed some life in the second quarter, winning the quarter by three points to put the score at 45-32 going into the half, but couldn’t keep it up and Anderson County’s lead increased in both the third and fourth quarters.

The Mavs won in almost every stat, losing to Campbell County only on blocks (3-5) and deflections (5-6). The Mavs especially shined on shooting, finishing with 10 treys and 18 two-point goals, as well as 19 free throws.

The majority of those points came from Connor Martin, who led the Mavs on scoring with 22 points, including three treys; and Carter Jett, who finished with five treys and 21 points. Behind those two, the third-highest scorer was JaTrevor Stagnolia with nine points. Eli Varner, in the vein of a true team player, finished with five assists, while Luke Lowery and Jett both finished with two steals apiece. Lowery also dominated on rebounds, with nine (two offensive and seven defensive).

Other notable stats were Connor Martin finishing with two blocks and eight rebounds, Brandon McGhee finishing with three rebounds and two assists despite only five minutes of playtime, and Brandon Webb finishing with four offensive rebounds, leading the team in that stat.

“It was a fun crowd,” said Wallace. “A lot of people came out. It was a good atmosphere, even though it was less than usual. I was really pleased with how we played. Connor played really well again. He played well against Grace when we played them, but didn’t get many minutes because of foul trouble. Carter Jett finally scored, hit five threes, which he hasn’t done this year. He really helped us spread their defense out.

“We had a balanced group. We got minutes from a bunch of guys, everyone that played played well. We shot the ball with limited turnovers. It was good.”
