Mavs win on the road
Beat Karns 71-55
Anderson County traveled to Karns on Tuesday, Jan 26, to face the Beavers, walking away with a 71-55 win after four quarters of straight dominance on the court.
The game started strong with the Mavs scoring 16 in the first quarter before upping that to 19 in the second and 20 in the third, outscoring the Beavers consistently for all four quarters and keeping a steady lead that rarely dropped below eight points.
The Mavs finished with an effective field goal percentage of 61 percent to Karns’s 41 percent, as well as four treys and an astounding 21/28 free throws for a 75-percent accuracy rate. They averaged 1.16 points per possession, with three blocks and a single steal.
On the negative side, the Mavs allowed a stomach-churning eight steals throughout the game, as well as 12 deflections. They lost out on transition points as well, managing only seven to Karns’ eight.
Carter Jett was the lead scorer for the Mavs, with 21 points for the night, including two of the team’s treys. Jett also finished with seven assists (the most of the night), as well as one deflection and one block.
Behind Jett, Connor Martin finished with 17 points, including the other two treys for the Mavs. Martin finished with eight rebounds and two assists, as well as two blocks. Finally, Eli Varner was the last player to score more than 10 points in the game, finishing with 15 for the Mavs. While he came in third on points, Varner finished with 10 rebounds, the most on either team, and three assists.
Other notable stats of the night included Stone Hatmaker finishing with the Mavs’ only steal, while Anthony White finished with five rebounds and two assists.
Head Coach Derek Wallace said he thought the game went well.
“I felt like we did just enough to win,” he said. “We won the Halls and the Karns games fairly comfortably. Both of them were district road games, which is always big. After Karns beat us at home last time, we really needed to win.”
Wallace said that while everyone performed well, he thought that the team owed much of it’s success to Stone Hatmaker.
“He did an amazing job on their point guard,” said Wallace. “The guy had 26 in the first game against us and he was held in check this time.
“Their big guy scored 40 or something against Clinton and we held him to around 20.
“Two road wins in one week is big.”
