It’s been a busy five days for the Clinton Middle School Lady Hawks.

Last Thursday, they played a district final losing to Alcoa Middle School; then Saturday began region play at Powell Middle School with a win over Karns Middle; and finished Monday night in the second round with a loss to Lake Forest Middle from Cleveland.

In the 45-24 loss to Alcoa, the Lady Hawks played close in the first half, but an ice-cold third quarter was devastating.

Alcoa enjoyed a slim 15-12 lead after the first quarter, with Lanee Carmichael and Addi Gamble helping the Lady Hawks match Alcoa almost basket for basket.

In the second stanza, Carmichael continued her scoring blitz, notching 10 of Clinton’s 12 second-quarter points and keeping the Lady Hawks’ deficit at three, 27-24, going into the half — withAlcoa also notching 12 in the quarter.

The Lady Hawks’ defense tightened the screws in the third quarter, limiting Alcoa to nine points, but their offense went cold. Josie Moody accounted for the only point for Clinton in the third frame.

Also in the third, Alcoa went to the charity twice, garnering two points for the effort, but Clinton had no chances from the free-throw line.

Clinton’s offense shook off its fog in the fourth, but the third quarter deficit made a comeback against a talented Alcoa squad a hard task.

With the loss, Clinton Middle entered the regional tourney as second seed.

The cobwebs were gone for the Saturday matinee first-round game for the Lady Hawks against Karns Middle School, with the Lady Hawks taking a convincing 55-32 win to advance in region play.

Lanee Carmicheal had a monster game, setting the tone for Lady Hawks’ offense early, scoring 18 of her game-high 23 points in the first half.

Karns made a mini-run at the Lady Hawks in the third frame, but it wasn’t enough to make a dent in the Clinton lead.

Josie Moody joined Carmichael in the double-digit scoring column with 11 points.

Monday night it was too much Timora Fields.

Fields scored 13 points for the Lady Bruins of Lake Forest Middle as Clinton fell 45-24.

It wasn’t so much that Fields was a scoring machine — though she was tied for the title of top scorer.

But Fields dominated inside.

And the Lady Hawks were getting good shots. They just weren’t falling.

Despite having trouble finding their mark on offense, the Lady Hawks played defense pretty well early in the game. With their offensive drought, the Lady Hawks were still in decent shape after one quarter of play, trailing 13-5.

Three things happened in the second quarter that hurt the Lady Hawks: 1) Fields made a big presence on the boards, scoring six points in the frame. Four of those came from three trips to the charity stripe; 2) Addie Green got hot for the Lady Bruins; and 3) the Lady Hawks’ offense took a leave of absence.

Coming out of the break for the third quarter, the Lady Hawks’ defense stepped up its game a notch, holding the Lady Bruins to seven points while giving Fields a bit of a fit. She left midway through the third frame after picking up three fouls — two on offense.

But the Lady Hawks couldn’t make a gain as their offense just wouldn’t get in gear.

Clinton continued its defensive pressure in the final frame, but down 35-13 there was too much ground to make up. Addi Gamble, Lanee Carmichael, and Josie Moody (twice) tried to help make up the deficit via the three-pointer, but Jada Francis took over the scoring moves for the Lady Bruins once Field exited the floor.
