Lakers open season with a win over Jellico, face Norris Saturday
The Lakers defeated Jellico 35-20 at home, thanks to a potent ground attack.
“We had a big night running the ball,” Tackett said. “Caleb Phillips had two long touchdown runs.”
Phillips had touchdown scampers of 25 and 50 yards respectively. Joey Radford also scored a pair of rushing TDs for Lake City, which also got touchdown runs from quarterback Maddox Tackett and Easton Owens.
The Lakers were without several players, including starters who missed the game due to illness.
Tackett noted that the Lakers had several costly miscues in the contest.
“We had several starters out and we made a lot of mistakes,” he said. “Our big concerns right now are getting everybody healthy and getting some things cleaned up.”
Lake City will face a tall test Saturday morning as it will renew its cross-county rivalry with Norris Middle School. The Senators have already played three games this season.
The showdown between Norris and the Lakers is slated for a 10 a.m. kickoff at Anderson County High School.
“That will be a big challenge for us,” Tackett said. “It will be great for the community, and we’re looking forward to it.”
Clinton falls to Spring City: Playing in their first road game of the 2022 campaign, the Hawks (0-3) came up on the short end of a 55-14 score at Spring City.
Clinton was bitten by the turnover bug in the game.
“We had four turnovers and had two pick-sixes against us, and you’re not going to beat anybody when that happens,” CMS Coach Justin Hite said. “You’re not going to beat people when you turn the ball over.”
Quarterback Jaylon Daniels accounted for both of the Hawks’ touchdowns as he threw a 30-yard scoring strike to Brenden Hayden and scored on a 2-yard plunge.
Clinton returns to action Thursday as it travels to Christian Academy of Knoxville.
Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Warrior Stadium.
Norris suffers first loss: The Norris Middle School Senators traveled to CAK last week and took their first loss of the season, 36-26.
Norris and Lake City will hook up for the battle of North Anderson at 10 a.m. Saturday morning.
