Lady Soccer ’Cats beat OSHS
A cancellation left the Oak Ridge High School girls soccer team and Coach Donnie Green in a tough spot.
Before the season, the Lady Wildcats had a match with Heritage. But the Lady Mountaineers backed out, citing a double booking.
Oak Ridge was originally slated to play Heritage Thursday night, but the cancellation forced Green to scramble to find a replacement game.
“I had a game scheduled with Heritage and they called and said they had to drop us because they were double- booked,” Green said. “I had to find a game, and Oliver Springs agreed to play us.” The Lady Wildcats defeated the Lady Bobcats soundly, claiming a 9-0 victory in a match that was called in the 51st minute due to the TSSAA mercy rule.
The match ended when Aniya Fisher tallied in the 51st minute.
Hayven Laurendine opened the scoring in the sixth minute and Brooklyn Henderson made it 2-0 approximately two minutes later.
Maggie Jackson (14th minute), Lera Lee (21st), Ellie Ward (23rd) and Estrella Perez Rodriguez (39th) each scored before halftime. Lilly Foust scored twice prior to the break. She tallied in the 16th and 18th minutes, respectively.
“Some younger kids got some valuable playing time,” Green said. “I was really impressed with Oliver Springs. They played hard. They didn’t quit and they were sportsmanlike.”
Oak Ridge opened the week with a 3-1 win over Grace Christian Academy on Tuesday, Aug. 23.
Laurendine scored in the 35th minute against the Lady Rams. Her marker was the only goal for the Lady Wildcats in the first half.
Mia Wiest, a junior, scored her first varsity goal in the second half, tallying in the 46th minute. Henderson scored in the 57th minute.
The Lady Wildcats outshot Grace 25-8.
“Out of the 80 minutes, we spent 60 in our attacking third of the field. We just couldn’t find the back of the net,” Green said.
Oak Ridge traveled to Campbell County Tuesday for a District 3-AAA contest. Results weren’t available at press time.
