Austin-East steps up to help Lady Mavs mark senior night
ACHS had a match canceled on what was to be its senior night as a non-region team dropped two dates for scheduled matches.
Enter Austin-East High School. The Lady Roadrunners agreed to make a trip to ACHS for a match on Monday, Sept. 26.
The Lady Mavericks defeated Austin-East, 7-0, but that didn’t seem to matter much.
“I just want to say that we’re grateful. We’re grateful to Austin-East for agreeing to play us on short notice,” Curtin said. “Their players and coaches were super classy and we’re thankful that they wanted to play us.”
On this night, the four seniors, including captain Caroline Spurling, Hayllynn Willis, Victoria Laster and team manager Elisa Morelli, a foreign exchange student from Italy, were driven to the field in Corvettes before the game.
“I want to thank a lot of people who made this happen,” Curtin said. “We had East Tennessee Corvette provide cars and I bet we had 20 Corvettes. I want to thank our boosters and give a big thanks to our administration.
“The sky’s the limit when it comes to what our administration does for our students. I also want to thank our junior captain Renee Wilson for helping with this. I also want to thank (boosters) Jason Shock and Angie Martin for their help.”
Megan Shock, Millie Swisher, Spurling, Laster, Willis, Ralyn Dixon and Jazmyn Barnes all scored goals for Anderson County against the Lady Roadrunners.
The Lady Mavericks (7-7) dropped a 2-0 decision against Oak Ridge Thursday.
Despite the loss to the Lady Wildcats (9-5), Curtin said he was pleased with his side’s effort.
“I was very pleased with our defensive play,” Curtin said. “We got out of shape (with formation) a couple of times but we played pretty well.”
