Anderson County High School’s cross country teams will finish the 2022 season on the grand stage.

Both the Mavericks and Lady Mavs qualified for this week’s Class A/AA state championships.

Both Anderson County teams posted runner-up finishes at the Region 2-A/AA championships at Victor Ashe Park in Knoxville.

Alcoa claimed the region team title for the second consecutive season.

“Our goal (for the girls) was to win the region, but Alcoa won it for the second year in a row,” ACHS Coach Derek Wallace said. “It was a two-team race between us and Alcoa.”

The Lady Tornadoes won the event with 23 points. The Lady Mavericks, who were without Megan Haire, who was injured, had 66 points. South-Doyle finished with 117 points, followed by Stone Memorial, which finished the day with 118 points.

“It was a four-team race [among] us, Alcoa, L&N STEM Academy and South-Doyle, and I thought we might come in second, third or fourth,” Wallace said. “We came in second, so we’re making strides.”

Vance Laster finished ninth and claimed all-region honors as he crossed the finish line in 18 minutes, 5.15 seconds. Conner Chandler posted an all-region performance as he completed the course in 18:09. 10, finishing in 11th place.
