First degree murder charge filed
Oliver Springs man charged with killing his wife
At the request of 7th Judicial District Attorney General Dave Clark, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation agents began working alongside the Oliver Springs Police Department to investigate a homicide that occurred on Monday morning.
Just after 6:30 a.m., officers with the Oliver Springs Police Department received a report of a domestic disturbance at a home in the 100 block of Midway Drive.
Upon arrival, officers located Janice Newport, 52, dead inside the home from an apparent gunshot wound.
During the course of the investigation, authorities determined that Nathan Newport, 60, the victim’s husband, was the person responsible for her death. Nathan Newport, who was described as “armed,” refused to come out when authorities arrived. He eventually exited and was arrested.
“We are saddened by the loss of life in our community, and also grateful for the efforts of the Oliver Springs officers and partners who helped bring about a quick arrest,” Police Chief David Laxton said.
Monday afternoon, police obtained a warrant for Nathan Newport, charging him with first degree murder and is being held in the Anderson County Jail without bond.
